The Revolution, the defending Cup champions, advanced to the quarterfinals against Crystal Palace Baltimore. The United Soccer League second division team, went through after beating Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls 2-0.

The Revolution completely dominated play in the second half. Brill scored in the 46th minute after flicking a header into the near post off Chris Tierney's corner kick. It was Brill's first goal as a professional after signing a developmental contract with the Revolution on March 12.

Germanese scored in the 63rd minute off a pass from Chase Hilgenbrinck with a shot in the far corner. Twellman followed in the 67th on a header off a pass from Tierney.

It was the first meeting between the Revolution and the Kickers, a United Soccer League second-division team playing its third game in four days.

The game was played before 3,950 fans that waited through a delay of 1 hour, 49 minutes before the start of play because of severe thunderstorms.
