STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Sweden and Norway are considering a joint bid to host the European Championship in 2016.
Sune Hellstromer, the head of the Swedish football association, told Swedish Radio on Tuesday that the two Scandinavian neighbors are planning to submit an application later this year.
Hellstromer said he believes the two countries have the capacity to host the event even if UEFA expands the competition from 16 to 24 teams. He said officials from Sweden and Norway will sit down to discuss a possible bid in the coming month.
Sweden hosted the Euros in 1992, when only eight teams participated and four stadiums were used. Poland and Ukraine are set to co-host the 2012 edition, after Switzerland and Austria hosted last month's tournament.
