It has been uggested that today's fields are so full of talent campared to any other era. Looks like ththe last several weeks have dispelled that theory.
There is Tiger and then there is all the others!
The last few weeks prove this point to a tee! Pardon the pun. The older guys who have a game outside of the Long Drive Tour are showing their game and Tiger...well he's Tiger.
Where are all the young studs? They are out on the range trying to groove a swing which will hit an 8 iron 175 yards but sprays them over a 15 yard pattern. The pattern increases with the length of club in their hand. Their driver's pattern now sprays over a 50 yard area. that leaves them hitting from the rough or even OB more than 40% of the time. That's close to 6 drives a round are in "trouble" of some sort. Even if its just long grass.
The guys who actually have the game to put the ball in the fairway and on greens while surrendering 10 - 15 yards are the ones fairing well lately. Only Tiger is able to keep his Fairways hit and GIR stats respectable. Now that he's on the IR we will see more tournaments being won by 30+ year olds. The guys who learned the game when accuracy still counted.
I'm no totally discounting the "Young Guns" but the evidence provided thus far doesn't bode well for them on a consistant basis. They don't know how to win and don't have the game to keep it on the short grass.
Where's Tiger's competition in his absence? He didn't have any and now we're left with the weak tour of "Also-Rans".

NO1NOW....Only Tiger is able to keep his Fairways hit and GIR stats respectable.
maybe i dont remember clearly, but didnt BBYG tell us not long ago that Tiger's percentage of fairways hit was NOT all that good?......i think that is the case. it was Tigers SCRAMBLING ability, and his PUTTING that kept him at, or near, the top. now i didnt watch any golf this weekend, so i cant speak about this last tourny. were there a lot of missed fairways from the young guys? and if they did miss 'em, then i believe that just shows how much better Tiger is , when playing with a good deal of adversity...such as missing fairways, and still winning!......i guess we would need to see if the winner had a high % of fairways hit.
iho.....

I know Tiger's fairways hit percentage isn't the greatest. I didn't mean to say, for him, that was a recipe for winning. It does however usually mean that for everyone else. Especially those who don't possess the scrambling ability of Tiger, like you suggested. Which was my point about the Long Drive Competition attitude the younger players have. They don't care where it goes, just as along as it is a long way. As Bubba found out, hitting a wayward shot for him, cost him the tourney.
Look at the results page.
Most of the top 25 are tour veterans who, like I said, learned and started their careers when accuracy was at a premium. Prior to '97 distance wasn't the concerning issue it is now...Pre Tiger era!
The younger players don't have talent. They have youth and can hit the ball a mile.

NO1NOW.......ahhhh...i see your point now, papa sahn.....lol........
agree totally....the worst part of tour pro's game today, imho, is their putting. i am truly amazed how often they miss apparently easy putts, or blow a 12 footer 4-5 feet past the hole!.......and on the opposite end of the spectrum, is how GREAT they are from the rough!...especially from say 160-185 out!....wow.....but..it is what it is......
oh, and you can always refer to the "SUX WITHOUT TIGER " thread, if you have any more complaints about the current crop of " tin cans" ...lol....
p.s....what has happened to everyone's " wunderkind " ..anthony kim???.......yeah...right...
jus sayin'.....

So-o-o-o-o ::
If todays players only seem to hit the ball a mile and lack talent . . . . . . . . is it the talent or the equipment????? Granted, I believe the MOG (Mediocrity of Golf) definitely lacks talent, but what about the talented one?
If you were to take Tiger and give him the equipment of yesteryear...... would he be as great as Jack was during his "yesteryear" ????? Since Tiger misses many a fairway ..... would he still be able to scramble from the roughs like he does today or would the equipment dimininsh that ability??

If you were to take Tiger and give him the equipment of yesteryear......
Tiger could tee off with the closest camera mans tripod......grab a tree limb for his next shot, outta the rough, i might add.......then snatch a rake from the trap for his bump n run shot.....and then drop the 18 foot putt with the pin for his par.........all, while letting the fans sign his cast-!!!!!.....lmao........
any questions?
jus sayin'.....
